Synopsis

Frank Beresford, a chemist at the Borstwick Steel Works who invents a carbonizing process that yields a fine grade of steel, meets the owner's daughter, Clara, and they are married, though her father refuses to give his consent. On their wedding day, Frank's wife, Lillian, whom he believes to have been lost, visits him and threatens blackmail. Summoned to Paris, he finds Leeson, Lillian's former husband, believed to have been lost in the Alps after the war; and when approached by a foreign agent, he refuses to sell him the carbonizing process. In consequence, he and Leeson are thrown into a sewer, but they escape. The experience restores Leeson's memory, Lillian is checkmated, and Clara and Frank are reunited.
