Synopsis

Running away from his enraged sister, whose husband is a blacksmith, Pip hides in the graveyard, only to find that he has fallen into the hands of Provis, an escaped convict. The criminal threatens him with death unless he gets him food and a file to sever his shackles. Pip complies, and when he returns to the blacksmith shop, he finds that Provis has been captured, but the convict keeps secret the aid that Pip gave him. Not long after, Pip is selected by the eerie Mrs. Havisham as a companion for her ward, Estella. Bitter against all men for an indignity suffered at the hands of one, Mrs. Havisham plans to have Pip fall in love with Estella and then separate the two. Just after the romance is broken up, Pip receives an income which he thinks has been bestowed by Mrs. Havisham in reparation for the wrong that she did him. While living as a gentleman in London, Pip is reunited with Estella but when he discovers that the money has been sent by Provis, who has grown rich herding sheep in the penal colony, Pip despairs that Estella will leave him. Contrary to his fears, Estella continues to love him and later when Provis, escaped from prison, seeks refuge, Estella attempts to aid the convict. When Provis is shot in his attempt at freedom, the two lovers pledge their love over their friend's dead body.
