Synopsis

Mary Reid decides to marry wealthy Norman Carter, a successful architect much older than herself, in order to provide a home for her invalid father. After she is married, Mary visits friends who own a lodge in the mountains and falls in love with John Talbot, who, unknown to her, is an acquaintance and business associate of Carter. When John returns to the city, he confides to Carter his despair at being in love with a married woman. Carter then invites John to become a guest in the Carter home until he is able to forget his vacation romance. When John and Mary again meet, they manage to hide their shock and surprise from Carter, but Carter's sister soon suspects the guilty love and makes Carter suspicious. Deciding to renounce his love, John is bidding farewell to Mary in her bedroom at night when a fire breaks out downstairs. Seeking to save his wife, Carter finds John and Mary together. After everyone is rescued, Carter tells the illicit lovers that he has decided to step aside and that he will send John to Italy on business until he and Mary can obtain a divorce.
