Synopsis

Tad, a wistful child of the Kentucky hills, worships his big brother, Brant, who is addicted to alcohol. At the persuasion of schoolteacher Margaret Dix, Brant allows Tad to attend school. When Brant does not evidence a desire to go to war, Margaret tells him he is unworthy to be called a man, and after receiving a draft summons, Brant meets Jeb, who has returned from the war badly maimed. Brant hides in the mountains until he is found by the sheriff and sent off to camp. He returns home as a decorated hero but hopelessly drunk. Stung by little Tad's reprovals, Brant resolves to reform, bringing happiness and understanding to the boy and Margaret.
