Synopsis

The Girl, educated in a convent in Rome, writes to her uncle in America, expressing a desire to return home, and he offers her a place with his family. Arriving in the Pennsylvania foundry town, she finds the conditions under which she must live intolerable, and when The Ironworker proposes marriage she accepts. A few years pass, during which a child is born to them. When The Mill Owner comes to their home to discuss business, she falls in love with him, but rather than face temptation she leaves home with the child. Aware of his wife's love for The Mill Owner, the husband clears the way for their union by exchanging identities with a worker killed in an accident and goes abroad to seek forgetfulness in a Roman monastery. The Mill Owner and The Girl are married and take a honeymoon voyage to Rome. There they confront the former husband, who dies from the shock of the meeting.
