Synopsis

Boss lumberjack John Haynes, nicknamed Hardwood, receives notification that he has inherited a "modiste" shop in New Orleans. Not knowing what this is, John is flabbergasted when he sees the dress shop window. After John offers to board with Judge Clay Emerson Meredith and pay eight weeks in advance so that the Judge can buy his granddaughter Caroline a graduation dress, John falls in love with her, but even though he buys fancy clothes, his rough manners put her off. Not confident to run his shop, John works as the store detective and is saved from a runaway elevator by wealthy, dissolute Wayne Page, who courts Caroline. When Rosalie Andre, the shop's clerk, tries to drown herself because of an affair with Page, John rescues her, but she dies later. When the papers blame John, he remains silent to protect Page. Although the Judge and Caroline decide to throw John out, after a letter from Rosalie arrives explaining what happened, John wins Caroline.
