Synopsis
Dorothy Hallowell becomes a stenographer in a notable Wall Street law firm, where she unwittingly drives junior partner Frederick Norman to distraction with her charms. Acting as her protector, Frederick finances her father, John Hallowell's, laboratory, but when he makes advances towards her, Dorothy rebukes him in horror. William Tetlow, a jealous clerk, discloses this incident to Frederick's fiancée, Josephine Burroughs, and she and her friends shun him. While Frederick seeks refuge in drinking, Dorothy attempts to make a new beginning in the country village of Milledgeville. The town minister is attracted to her, but word soon spreads that she is a "scarlet woman" and she returns to New York. After Prince Boris attacks her in his apartment, she decides to drown herself, but Frederick saves her and places her in the care of his housekeeper. Her spirits renewed, she realizes that Frederick's love for her is genuine and she marries him.

The novel was serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, and was adapted into a play by Louis Evan Shipman, which was produced in New York on January 1, 1912. The film was also known as A Grain of Dust. A special musical score was prepared for the production. Carle E. Carleton was the president of Crest Pictures Corp. Tiffany-Stahl remade Phillips' novel in 1928 with Ricardo Cortez and Claire Windsor starring, and George Archainbaud directing. (See AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.2206.)
