Synopsis

After prospector T. M. Michaels and Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman Lewis are killed near the town of Blackwater by a gang headed by lawyer Ned Thompson and saloon owner Bill Haley, Mountie Tim Ransom is assigned to investigate. Meanwhile, in Blackwater, Thompson's gang plans to tunnel into the rich Elliot Mine, owned by Linda Elliot, from their own claim, the neighboring Imperial Mine. Because Linda believes that her mine is worthless, Thompson, who is her attorney, advises her to stop operations and let the claim revert. When Tim, masquerading as the recently captured outlaw and murderer, Joe Reed, arrives in town, he is recognized by traveling salesman Wilbur Higgins and asks him to keep his secret. Tim then visits the saloon and establishes his criminal identity. Later, on Higgins' advice, Tim takes a room in Linda's boardinghouse. Learning that Linda's father died in a mining accident, Tim obtains her permission to work the mine. To prevent Tim from discovering the vein of ore in the mine, Haley and Thompson divert a stream so that it will flood the mine. Their plan backfires, however, when the diverted stream washes away the soil covering the gold vein, and Tim discovers it. He then instructs Linda to file an affidavit testifying that she is working the mine and wishes to retain her claim. When Linda questions him, he reveals that her father's death was not an accident. Meanwhile, Tim shows the ore to Haley, who insists that it is only mica, or fool's gold. When Tim becomes angry and announces that he will take the ore to the assayer, Thompson suggests that they threaten to turn him in to the Mounties unless he makes a deal with them. Tim agrees to work with Thompson and Haley, who reveal that they plan to rob the stagecoach that is carrying Linda's affidavit. Tim offers to help them, but secretly informs the Mounties of their plans, and the robbery is prevented. Haley learns that the real Joe Reed is in prison, and he and his men head for the mine to kill Tim. Higgins overhears their plans and sends Linda to warn Tim. Together they hold off Haley's men until the Mounties, summoned by Higgins, arrive and round up the gang. Later, Tim hires a crew to work the Elliot Mine, and buys a wedding ring from Higgins, which he presents to Linda.
