Synopsis

At New York's Metropolitan Hospital, a female physician comforts an elderly man who is embarrassed to describe his symptoms; a diabetic decries her inability to work; a distraught daughter kisses her suffering mother, the victim of a heart attack; an ambulance driver searches for a hospital which will accept his passenger; a middle-class adolescent suffers the effects of mescaline; a Puerto Rican widower, concerned for his children, resists hospitalization; a psychiatrist advises a black homosexual on welfare payments and tries to place the youth in a private room; a nurse, caring for a 2-year-old boy, the victim of a 15-foot fall and the ward of an alcoholic grandmother, considers taking the child home with her; and, in the chapel, a Catholic priest instructs patients to consider God's greatness and man's insignificance.
