Synopsis

Thinking that he is hauling crates of bananas, Uncle Eph, an old black man working for the Sappington family, nightly carts contraband liquor to a dance hall run by Bill Jackson. When the revenue officers stage a raid on the dance hall, Jackson, believing that Eph has squealed, frames him for murder. Assuming that Eph is innocent, Claude Sappington, a mystery-story writer, sets out to prove it: disguised by blackface, he gets a job as a busboy in Jackson's dance hall. When Jackson's jealous girl friend catches the bootlegger visiting Darktown's Cleopatra, she accuses him of the murder for which Eph is charged; Claude overhears the angry remark and immediately tries to apprehend Jackson, who escapes in a speedboat. Claude gives chase and captures him, taking him to the governor in time to save Eph from hanging. While at the state capitol, Claude, who is in love with the governor's daughter, obtains his permission to marry her.
