Synopsis
Discouraged and despondent with life among the trappers in the snow country, Ed Nolan finds Black Beasley mistreating a dog at the local trading post and gets in a fight trying to defend it. Rinty, the dog, wins the battle by attacking the cruel trapper and, accepting Ed as his friend, follows him home but refuses to enter the neglected cabin. Ed takes Rinty to Mary Mallory, whom Ed has failed to win, and in their mutual solicitude over the dog, a new understanding is born and Ed emerges from his inertia. Rinty, who has devoted himself to Mary and her little sister, engages in a fight with a black wolf that tries to attack the child in the woods; Mary, finding the child ill from fright, believes the dog has attacked her, and Ed determines to shoot him. When Mary is forced to take the child through a storm to a doctor, a fallen tree capsizes the sled; the faithful Rinty takes a message to Ed, who arrives with a rescue party.
