Synopsis

Judy Nichols, a poor Chicago secretary, falls in love with Ronald McKane, a struggling young civil engineer, but refuses to marry him and commit herself to a life of poverty. Judy goes to New York, meets financier Sanford Gillespie, a habitual philanderer, and persuades him to advance Ronald's career. Judy and Ronald are married, but he increasingly devotes his time to business, neglecting Judy in favor of the frenzied pursuit of mammon. Ronald meets a millionaire widow and leaves Judy so as to court her. Out of spite and wounded pride, Judy goes to Gillespie and persuades him to ruin Ronald, offering herself to him in return. Ronald's fortune is wiped out the following day, and Ronald goes to the banker's apartment, intent on exacting revenge for Gillespie's action. Ronald finds Judy there and tries to strangle her. Gillespie breaks in, and Ronald and Judy are reconciled.
