Synopsis

Left penniless by the death of her parents, Mary Ann wanders around London until Lancelot Melmont, a struggling musician, finds her and gets her a job as his landlady's maid. Then, Mary Ann learns that she has inherited a fortune, and, although she wants to stay with Lancelot's landlady, she is forced to leave when a wealthy couple adopts her. A few years later, Mary Ann's foster parents give a party for her, and one of the guests is Lancelot, who has become a famous composer. He and Mary Ann, who have not seen each other for some time, renew their friendship and eventually fall in love and get married.
