Synopsis

After the death of his wealthy Uncle Peter, Jack Ballentine, an irresponsible youth, learns that his uncle's will stipulates that in order to inherit his fortune, Jack must prove to his guardian, Mrs. Walton, that he is a competent business man. Totally lacking any business acumen, Jack soon after loses a large sum of money by investing in a smokeless torpedo. While at ringside during a prize fight, Jack discovers that the game is fixed, and in the ensuing free for all, the referee is killed. Jack escapes and goes out West, where he rescues old Bailey and his daughter Jane from a gang of robbers. Meanwhile, Mrs. Walton has tied up Jack's bank account, leaving him nearly penniless. Jack proves his mettle, however, when he saves Jane from being kidnapped by her father's former secretary, and all ends happily as he wins Mrs. Walton's approval and marries Jane.

Notes

The 1927 ten-part Pathé serial Melting Millions also bears Joseph Anthony Roach's story credit. However, plot synopses of the film and the serial bear little resemblance to each other.
