Synopsis
At nightfall, various shady characters, drunks and women of easy virtue congregate at a café, "La Estrella," in the old district of Buenos Aires. Even though he has a fine singing voice, Roberto Ramírez plays cards there with people unacquainted with his trickery. Roberto gets to know Alina, a young voice teacher and occasional talent scout, who predicts a great future for him as a tango singer. In front of Inspector Maldonado, the card sharks at "La Estrella" conceal the cheating, except for Rancales, who, but for Roberto's intervention, would have shot the policeman. Roberto's future lies between the profitable business of card games and the uncertainty of the world of the tango, but Alina's enthusiasm for her protégé resolves the dilemma, and with the help of an impresario, she launches him on the road to fame. Although Roberto has forsaken gambling, Rancales seeks a large pay-off from him not to reveal his past. Roberto and Rancales fight, a gun goes off and Rancales dies. Maldonado finds evidence that Roberto has killed the blackmailer but, realizing that Roberto is the man who saved his life, lets him go free. Roberto makes his professional concert debut, and is successful in song and in love.
