Synopsis

Expelled from a seminary for several indiscretions, John Fairmeadow heads West, and makes a stop in a lumber camp just after Batch, one of the lumbermen, has died. John delivers a moving funeral speech and then prepares to leave, but the men in the camp, impressed by his ruggedness as well as by his oratory, persuade him to stay. At the camp, John gets to do the sort of work for which the seminary found him unfit, as he first converts the hard-drinking, gambling lumbermen in a nearby camp, and then convinces a young runaway to return to her family. Impressed by what he hears about John, a bishop ordains him, after which the new minister marries Batch's daughter Pattie.
