Synopsis
As a baby, John Ermine is stolen from a wagon train by the Crow Indians, and is adopted by Chief Fire Bear. John grows to manhood, ignorant that he is a white man until his parentage is disclosed to him by Crooked Bear, a white hermit who is on friendly terms with the Crows. Crooked Bear teaches John the language and customs of the white man's civilization, impressing upon him that it is his sacred responsibility to keep peace between the white men and the Indians. Later, John is sent to the Yellowstone army post on a scouting mission and, while there, falls in love with Katherine Searles, the daughter of company Colonel Searles. Katherine, believing John to be a halfbreed, takes his declaration of love as an insult, as does her father and Lieutenant Butler, her suitor. Rejected, John returns to his tribe. When news comes that the fort has been attacked by hostile Indians, the Crows come to the rescue in the nick of time, but John falls in battle while protecting his beloved Katherine.

Notes
According to publicity for the film, John Darkcloud, called "Tahamount" in his own language, was a model for Remington, an artist noted for his themes of the American West, for more than nineteen years. Before appearing in this film, Darkcloud, a chief of the Algonquins, graduated from Carlisle University and became a lecturer. Director Ford allowed Darkcloud to arrange anything which had to do with Indians in his own way.
