Synopsis

Joanna Manners, who works at James Grayson's exclusive woman's shop, comes into a mysterious legacy of $1 million. Her sudden wealth attracts the attentions of Frank Brandon, the bank president's nephew, and alienates the affections of her fiancé, architect John Wilmore. Through Brandon and Anthony Eggleson, who has charge of her financial affairs, she is introduced to Carlotta de Silva, a woman of the world in love with Brandon, and Carlotta helps Joanna lead a life of luxury and indulgence. Joanna quarrels with John and goes abroad for 10 months, returning with a "heavy" reputation. In a fight to protect her honor she nearly kills Brandon. Later, after a vain attempt to get her old job back, she learns that she has been a pawn in a bet between Eggleson and Greyson of $1 million on her chastity. Eggleson adopts her, and she is reunited with John.
