Mistaking pity for love, Rose Trenton agrees to marry George Prothero, who was blinded in the war. She breaks the engagement, however, when she realizes she loves Sandy Sanderson, and George goes to Europe. Upon his return George and Sandy go for a ride, and George returns alone with the explanation that Sandy was killed by an assailant and he (George) was unable to help. The next day Rose receives, in reply to her letter to a French eye specialist, a report that George was cured sometime ago. Sandy rushes in and describes George's attack on him; George confesses and leaves in disgrace.
