Synopsis

When her husband dies and leaves her penniless, Mrs. Lawrence Evringham moves in with her wealthy but grim father-in-law and schemes to marry Eloise, her daughter, to the rich Dr. Ballard. The crotchety Mr. Evringham then receives a letter from his second son requesting that Jewel, his young daughter, be allowed to stay with her grandfather while he and his wife travel to Europe on business. Because his daughter-in-law tells him to refuse, Mr. Evringham decides to accept. Jewel arrives to an icy reception, which is topped off by the unyielding treatment of Mrs. Forbes, the housekeeper, but soon Jewel's unrelentingly cheerful manner begins to affect the household. Through her belief in Christian Science, Jewel cures herself of a fever, softens and converts her grandfather, reforms her cousin and aunt and induces Mrs. Forbe's son to stop drinking. Through her efforts, the "Castle Discord" is thus transformed into the "Castle Contented."

Notes

Clara Louise Burnham's novel was also the basis for the 1923 Universal release entitled A Chapter in Her Life, directed by Lois Weber and starring Claude Gillingwater and Jane Mercer (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30).
