Synopsis

Robert Standing finishes Book I of Franklin B. Coates's life of Jesse James and assures Jesse James, Jr. that he still wishes to marry the latter's daughter Lucille. Mr. James, in turn, persuades Robert to read Book II before he decides: Returning home to Missouri after the war, determined to live a peaceful life, Jesse almost immediately finds it necessary to leave his friends in order to escape the Home Guards, who believe Jesse to be responsible for a bank robbery. Finding it impossible to live as a peaceful citizen with Zee, the woman he loves, Jesse must dodge and battle the Home Guards and other posses, even to perform acts of kindness. Branded as an outlaw, he lives like one, and the maiming of members of his family by his pursuers forces Jesse to seek "a life for a life." Many of Jesse's exploits for good and evil are detailed, and it is revealed that some crimes attributed to him were actually committed by others. Finally, Jesse is assassinated by his friend Bob Ford. Robert's devotion to Lucille is only increased by this story, and their future happiness receives the blessing of Jesse James, Jr.
