Synopsis
While on business in London, Bradley, a happily married man, falls in love with Mercedes, the Spanish Ambassador's wife. Bradley returns to America and his family, but his infatuation for Mercedes draws him back to London. Discovering that she has been brutalized by her husband, Bradley convinces Mercedes to go away with him but neglects to inform her that he is already married. While crossing the channel, Bradley inadvertently discloses his marriage and Mercedes, not wanting to come between husband and wife, flees to a convent. Unable to find her, Bradley joins an expedition to Africa while his wife and children travel abroad. There the children fall victim to an epidemic of fever, and Mercedes, who is now a nurse, is summoned. When she learns the identity of the family, she sends for Bradley and is thus able to effect a reunion of the family that she had unwittingly disrupted.
