Synopsis

Jim Hackler, a small town political boss during the 1880's, decides to take revenge on his former friend, Elias Rigby. While they were in the army together, Rigby had intercepted Hackler's correspondence with his sweetheart, thereby winning the woman for himself. When Rigby, now a middle-aged lawyer, decides to enter the race for district attorney, Hackler convinces Wheeler, the fiancé of Rigby's daughter Lucy, to oppose him. Although Wheeler wages a clean campaign, Lucy breaks their engagement when he responds angrily to her father's attacks. Hackler uncovers evidence of Rigby's dishonesty, but is dissuaded from making the information public by Rigby's wife. Instead, Hackler engineers Wheeler's victory and reconciles the young lovers.
