Synopsis

Ruthless millionaire David Waltham heads a syndicate that corners the food market through purchasing and then closing many canneries. After engineer John Adams, one of the thousands left unemployed because of Waltham's syndicate, loses his savings when his bank closes, he is caught stealing bread to feed his family and is sentenced to the workhouse for thirty days. He returns home to find that his wife was compelled to accept the attentions of the rent collector in order to feed their children. While bread lines and fights among the starving increase, Waltham remains unmoved. Embittered, John gets work in one of Waltham's storehouses. After he induces Waltham to come alone to the warehouse, John knocks him out and ties him up, hidden behind boxes, with food just out of his reach. Days later, Waltham's efforts to reach the food cause the boxes to fall and bury him.
