Synopsis
While visiting a Geisha house in Japan, Archibald Crocker, a dissolute drunk, meets Anthony Ives Eckhart, a scientist devoting his life to the study of Oriental music. In Crocker's drunken ravings, Anthony learns that he has come to Japan to kill his wife who has deserted him for another man. The next day, Anthony leaves Japan for Peking, and while seated in his hotel room, hears a beautiful voice singing in perfect pitch. Unable to contain his enthusiasm, Anthony bursts into the next room and meets Crocker's wife Heloise. He persuades her to sing into his phonograph, and over the next few weeks, their shared interests gradually blossom into love. Upon learning of Crocker's arrival in Peking, Anthony goes to plead Heloise's case with him. The scientist urges Crocker to grant his wife a legal separation, arguing that she had not truly betrayed him but had separated from her lover immediately after leaving home. Agreeing to consider Anthony's proposition and give him an answer within an hour, Crocker comes to the scientist's hotel, drunk and armed with a knife. He is met on the stairs by Anthony, and in the ensuing struggle, Crocker falls down the stairs and breaks his leg. While he is being carried back to his hotel, Crocker stabs himself with his knife, freeing Heloise to marry Anthony.
