Synopsis

Elsie Graves, the young wife of Justice Graves, a cruel and abusive man, falls in love with Robert Amory, the gentle widower who lives next door with his son Ned. Finding his wife in Amory's arms when he returns home unexpectedly one day, Graves shoots his rival, takes his young daughter Sarita and flees to Mexico. Years later, Ned Amory, who has grown into a fine young man, accepts a diplomatic position to Mexico City. En route, he is robbed and thrown in the jail of a small Mexican settlement. Graves discovers Ned's identity and, still filled with hatred for the man who stole his wife, has the local politico sentence Ned to a year's hard labor while selling his services to Graves who then takes him home and tries to break him, body and soul. Ned is beaten and forced to do menial labor, which arouses Sarita's pity and then her love. She helps Ned escape and together they flee to the United States. Graves pursues, only to find the couple married and safe across the Rio Grande. He begs Sarita to return, but she refuses, leaving the old man to realize the terrible cost of his hatred.
