Synopsis

Joe Louden's defiance of conventions and his knowledge of corrupt political leaders in the town of Canaan stamp him as an outcast of polite society. His friend Ariel Taber, who becomes wealthy when her uncle dies, leaves town, advising him to make good; and he begins to study law. Later, after Ariel's return, he opens a law office in Beaver Beach, a hotbed of political scandals. Happy Farley kills Nashville Cory because of the latter's attentions to his wife, and Joe defends him. His prime witness reveals in anger that Judge Pike, the social and political ruler of the town, is the owner of the beach, and Farley defends the judge against the mob. Farley is acquitted; Joe wins Ariel and is proclaimed the next mayor of Canaan.
