Synopsis

Wealthy Jeanette Harcourt takes Paul Moraunt away from impoverished Madeleine Turner, but after Jeanette discards him, Madeleine gets her revenge by marrying Jeanette's sweetheart, lawyer Henry Mortimer, whom Madeleine slowly comes to love. Then Paul returns to Madeleine and asks for money. When she refuses, Paul robs Henry, who suspects his wife because of her gambling debts. Henry also believes that Madeleine still loves Paul, and so decides to kill him. Madeleine, Henry and Paul meet, and after an argument and some gunshots, Paul winds up dead. Henry and Madeleine suspect each other of murder, but Henry takes the rap to protect Madeleine. Finally, Jeanette confesses to the crime; hiding in the room, she killed Paul when he was about to confess to the robbery, because the admission would have healed the breach between Henry and Madeleine, who are indeed reconciled after the trial.
