Synopsis

One year after his multi-millionaire father challenges him to earn his own living, Joe Smith, Jr. sits distraught, dishevelled, and penniless with other bums on a New York park bench. Businessman Ned Stevens, arguing with stock manipulator Franklin Overton that the only bond worth buying is the "bond of humanity," invites Joe to be his house guest for a week to see if a tramp with money can better himself. Joe tells his life story at Stevens' house, but only Stevens' sister Lucy, who falls in love with Joe, believes it. Overton hires Joe for $100 a week, and declares that Joe's father is his backer. After he talks Stevens' wife into investing $1,000 and she pawns her pearl necklace to do so, Overton accuses Joe of stealing it. Joe's father arrives after receiving a letter from Lucy, and exposes Overton. He admits that Joe has made good, which leaves Joe and Lucy happy at the end.
