Synopsis

After Steve, a young college-educated man, announces to his friends that he is going to end his unsuccessful, dissipated life, Maisie, whose name has been associated with Steve's, follows him to the waterfront, too late to stop him from leaving on a small boat. After drifting for days, Steve is washed onto an island, where he is found by Meera Calhoun, who, never having seen anyone other than her father and their servants, falls in love. Calhoun, a lighthouse keeper living a hermetic life after having been wronged long ago, begins to like Steve. Their friendship continues even after Calhoun discovers it was Steve's father who wronged him. Maisie, who learns Steve's whereabouts from a traveling beachcomber, comes to the island, and jealous of Meera, tells Calhoun that she is Steve's wife. When Calhoun falls unconscious after raging about Steve and his father, Maisie confesses her lie. Calhoun recovers and Steve and Meera marry in New York.
