Synopsis
Don Miguel Arguella, owner of a vast California estate, is holding a fiesta when message arrives of a lost party in the desert; he rescues the pioneers, headed by Reuben Pettingill and including Jason Kelsey and his daughter Mary, to whom Don Mike is attracted. The alcalde, Don Luis Ybara, is embittered because of Don Miguel's interference in his persecution of Carmen, a girl on the estate. Pettingill, learning that "Don Mike" has neglected to record the boundaries of his land, files claim to the greater part of the estate and persuades Kelsey to promise him Mary. Don Luis is found murdered, and Pettingill offers a reward for the capture of Don Mike. General Frémont hears of the incident and sends a group of soldiers to the rancho, while Don Mike, dressed as a monk, attends the wedding as the officiating priest. A struggle ensues, and Pettingill is unmasked as the murderer and usurper.
