Synopsis

Muriel Fleming's mother wants her to marry a wealthy man, but instead she secretly marries Graydon Burton, who soon leaves to try to make his fortune out West. Some time later, word comes that Graydon has died, so Muriel lets her mother push her into a marriage with wealthy lawyer Philip Lewis. After the wedding, Graydon turns up explaining that he had been wrongfully accused of murder, had escaped from authorities and then had been believed killed. The real murderer was Graydon's partner Herman Slade, and when he too shows up, Muriel kills him. Jealous of Graydon, Philip, now the district attorney, sentences him to death for Slade's murder. After Philip is elected governor, however, Muriel prevails upon him to pardon Graydon and give her a divorce so that she can return to the man she loves.
