Synopsis

Peter Hungerford, the kindhearted proprietor of a London clothing store, loses both his wife and his business when she takes all of his savings and runs off with Oscar, the clerk. Forced into bankruptcy, Peter takes a position as the manager of a cheese business owned by his patron, the Earl of Denham. The earl also hires Paula, Peter's former cashier; and Peter, aware of the earl's amorous intentions, keeps strict watch over the girl. The earl, finally driven to distraction, fires Peter, but, overtaken by remorse, he soon rehires him. The creditors who put Peter's store into receivership request that he return as manager, and he leaves the estate, upbraiding Paula for her announced intentions of staying on as the earl's companion. Paula then realizes that she loves Peter and follows him back to the shop, where she takes charge of him and his affairs on a permanent basis.
