Synopsis

The tremendous effort involved in Orson Welles' film production of Shakespeare's Othello is documented. Although the project had no budget, it was contributed to by many actors and filmmakers who were apparently working on the labor of love out of admiration for Welles. Production began in 1948 and the film won the Palme d'Or at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival. Because he often ran out of money during the filming, Welles was forced to take other paying work, and as this caused a protracted shooting schedule, the movie was shot in a variety of locations. Wells and many of the participants in the project are interviewed.
