Synopsis

Dora Hart, a self-promoting secretary in the office of Miller Publishing, persuades a customer, real estate promoter Jimmie Hanford, to ask her out. Dora and Jimmie fall in love, and she becomes his secretary, but their subsequent marriage plans are ruined by the objections of Jimmie's wealthy mother. Forced by Mrs. Hanford to leave Jimmie, Dora agrees to help Daniel Mason investigate Jimmie's debts. Then Dora meets Eugene "Breck" Breckenridge and, knowing he does not believe in marriage, agrees to pretend to be his fiancée in order to accompany him on a cruise. Afterward, Dora takes advantage of a rift in a wealthy friend's engagement, and her fiancé, George Davis, asks Dora to marry him. Breck warns Dora that she is marrying out of her class, and she angers George and his mother by being disrespectful. George then reconciles with his former girl friend, Sally Newton, but Dora refuses to divorce him. Meanwhile, Jimmie has become employed by Mason and, after learning that Dora had turned on him, commits suicide. In Jimmie's will, Dora is left fifty dollars for services rendered, and the resulting scandal causes Dora to agree to divorce George.
