Synopsis

At the age of 40, Dinah East--a legendary movie queen of the 1950's now living as a recluse--suffers a heart attack and dies while riding in her Rolls Royce. Hollywood is shocked, but the mortician attending the deceased is absolutely dumb-struck when he discovers that the former sex goddess was actually a man. Once the mortician has broken the news to the local press, the people who knew Dinah best reflect on their relationships with her. Most of them never knew that at 18 the star decided to switch sexes when a studio guard told her that the casting department was seeing only young girls. Meeting with a modicum of success as a female, Dinah decided to make the deception permanent. One of the first to befriend and help the new actress was Oscar-winning costume designer Daniela. When Dinah discovered that the older woman was a lesbian, the two made a pact of secrecy, and Daniela helped promote Dinah as a glamour girl. Tony Locke never knew the truth, however; a homosexual matinee idol, he considered it good for his image to be seen frequently in public with the beautiful Dinah. Attorney Alan Sloane knew the facts; enamored of his beautiful client, he had so persistently tried to force himself upon her that in desperation Dinah had shown him physical proof of her sex. Hardest hit by the star's death are her adopted son Jeff, who deeply loved his mother; and Tank Swenson, Dinah's loyal chauffeur. A former prizefighter and a bisexual, Tank worshiped Dinah, and his devotion and affection was often returned. Unable to reconcile himself to his loss, Tank takes his own life by walking into the Pacific Ocean.
