Synopsis

When Dr. Hugh Annersley, who is working on a cure for cancer, runs out of funds, he writes Griswold, who owes him money and is a patient of Hugh's eccentric uncle Dr. Appledan, asking for payment. After receiving the letter, Griswold is found dead and the evidence points to Hugh. Meanwhile, Frank Sergeant, an acquaintance of Hugh's, discovers he has only six months to live. Since Frank will die soon anyway, Hugh's sister Julia asks him to confess to the murder so that Hugh can continue his research. Frank agrees, but just as he is about to go to the electric chair, he learns that he is not fatally ill after all. To save him, Julia goes to work on the case, finds out that Appledan committed the murder and gets him to confess just in time.
