Synopsis
Captain John Sutter owns a large tract of land near Sacramento, granted him by the Mexican governor of California. Sutter, planning to create an Empire of the Pacific, is joined in his grand schemes by Arabella Ryan, a handsome adventuress, and Marsdon, an unscrupulous soldier of fortune. When Sutter's daughter, Sierra, finds out that her father is in love with Arabella, she denounces him for defiling the sacred memory of her mother. Sutter is overcome with remorse and angrily orders Marsdon and Arabella from his home. Cal Coleman, a frontier guide and scout who is leading the Donner party across the mountains, is forced to ride for help when their wagon train becomes snowbound in a high mountain pass. Weak from cold and hunger, Cal manages to ride as far as Sutter's fort, whence assistance is dispatched to Donner Pass. Cal is nursed back to health by Sierra, with whom he falls in love. When the Mexican-American settlers decide to revolt against the Mexican government, Cal is elected their leader, and he organizes a successful attack against Fort Sonoma. California is annexed to the United States, Marsdon is killed in a duel with Judge Coleman, Arabella commits suicide, and Cal and Sierra are married.
