Synopsis

Robert Carr, the grandson of a Confederate soldier, was reared to honor the Stars and Bars, and to regard the Stars and Stripes as the enemy flag. Robert's fiancée, Maryland Warren, who respects the United States even though she also has a grandfather who fought for the South, chides Robert for cowardice when, because he tears his pants, he lets his rival suitor rescue her from a runaway horse. After war is declared against Germany, and Robert refuses to rise when the American flag is lowered, Maryland accuses him of disloyalty and breaks their engagement. Beaten by hoboes and put unconscious into a freight car, Robert arrives in Arizona to find that Maryland, who was vacationing there, is being held for ransom by Mexican bandits across the border. He fights the Mexicans for insulting the American flag, and rides away with Maryland. Surrounded, Robert is about to shoot Maryland to prevent her capture, when a posse of cowboys rescue them. Robert and Maryland return to Virginia reunited.
