Synopsis

The Smith County District Headquarters of the Texas Rangers receives a new shipment of wild horses, but five of the dozen horses expected have been rustled by the Black Diamond gang from the outlaw territory of Three Corners. Another horse, Cyclone, has been injured. General store owner Shorty arrives at headquarters with his general store wagon and a passenger, Helen Bennett, who is headed for Three Corners, where her brother Tim and sister Rita run a trading post. Ranger Sunset and Jed Thomas, a trainee Ranger, are also headed for Three Corners to try to recover the horses. Meanwhile, at the trading post, Bart Dawson, who, like the others, is worried about the impending annexation of Three Corners, tells Rita and Tim, a cripple, about the five horses he has rustled. Later, Sunset and Jed are captured by Dawson's men but Rita releases them. Back at Ranger headquarters, Jed tends to Cyclone's wounds and manages to put a saddle on him. When one of the Rangers tries to ride Cyclone, however, the horse kills him, and Capt. J. C. McCloud orders that the animal be destroyed the next day. Jed protests and, that night, rides off on Cyclone. The next day, McCloud, thinking that Jed has deserted, assigns Sunset to bring him back. Sunset tracks Jed into outlaw territory, catches him and is about to take him back when he is attacked by Cyclone and is injured in a fall. Jed goes to Three Corners to get help, telling Rita that he is no longer a Ranger. As Sunset recovers at the trading post, Rita tells him that the law killed her father and made a cripple out of her brother. Eventually, Sunset leaves but Jed stays behind. Dawson's men follow Sunset and try to procure from him the names of the people on the annexation committee. Sunset overpowers them and returns to Ranger headquarters, where he is introduced to the attorney general, who has come to sign the final documents related to annexing the Three Corners territory. Dawson is tipped off about where the committee will meet the attorney general and plans an ambush. After Helen tells Rita that she is in love with Sunset and convinces her and Tim to help, Jed and the others head off to stop the ambush, while Helen rides to Ranger headquarters for more help. Sunset and the attorney general meet the committee and receive an official ballot box. Jed arrives in time to warn them about Dawson's plans, and Sunset, Jed and the Rangers defeat his gang in a fierce gun battle. Later, at the trading post, Shorty takes a photograph of the group to commemorate the annexation.
