Synopsis
The film, shot in Cuba from May to September of 1968, depicts Fidel Castro as a benevolent, charismatic leader, familiar with the problems of the proletariat. During a 5-day jeep trip through Oriente Province, he listens to villagers' complaints about lack of hospitals, midwives, transportation, and roads. He also revisits his nursery school, where he recalls his first revolutionary poem. Castro candidly discusses his country's agricultural, racial, and educational problems, and comments on the psychological predisposition of the Cuban people to remain underdeveloped. Interspersed with views of Castro mingling with peasants and workers--he is seen determinedly struggling in an informal baseball game--is newsreel footage of the Cuban revolution, including scenes of the Moncada Barracks raid, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, as well as a portrait of the martyred Che Guevara. Interviews with political prisoners and expatriated Cubans seeking exile in Miami balance an essentially favorable view of the controversial man. At a factory inspection and a mass rally in Havana, Castro exhorts his people to greater revolutionary fervor.
