Synopsis
After witnessing a railroad accident near their home, young architect Peter Cort and his wife Barbara rescue a tramp from a demolished freight car. The tramp, a drug addict, is taken to their home where he is put to bed and attended by a physician. The weeks pass and the expenses for their act of kindness mount rapidly for the Corts. Barbara, intuiting her husband's concern, endeavors to find some way to help with their finances. After she writes a play, the tramp reads it and offers her invaluable aid with its structure. He then advises that she send it to Phillip Allen, the great theatrical producer. She does so, and the play is accepted, unknown to Peter. Meanwhile, Peter has secured a contract to build a house for Mrs. Stoddard, which he keeps a secret from Barbara. But each, ultimately, sees the other in the company of their respective patrons and both become furiously, though silently, jealous. Their suspicions are resolved on the night Barbara's play is produced. They return home with Allen to find the tramp missing, and the producer then shows them a letter written by the tramp which explains his prompt acceptance and production of the play. Learning that the tramp was Allen's old friend and the father of Mrs. Stoddard, Peter's client, the Cort's then realize that he was also their benefactor.
