Synopsis

The efforts of Scotland Yard detective Brandsby Mordant to extricate his nephew Charles Easton from the clutches of a gang of thieves known as "The Four" result in the detective becoming enmeshed in a web of circumstantial evidence which sends him to prison along with the crooks. Learning that his conviction arose from a double-cross perpetrated by former associates Phineas Glenister, Jefferson Armstrong and Adolph Gassner, Mordant vows revenge. After escaping from Dartmour Prison, Mordant, accompanied by his wife Marie Marat, traces his betrayers to San Francisco where Gassner is mysteriously slain and Glenister's daughter Dorothy, kidnapped. Mordant is forced to reevaluate his plans when he discovers that in actuality, Dorothy is his nephew Charles' daughter. Relinquishing his lust for vengeance, Mordant is about to resume his peaceful life when a detective from Scotland Yard finds him. Dorothy intervenes, however, and convinces the detective to return to England alone, leaving Mordant behind to begin a new life.
