Synopsis

Scorned by her father, Mary Ladislas, an aspiring actress, elopes with the chauffeur. Before the liaison is made legal, however, the chauffeur dies in a car crash and Mary contemplates suicide. With only a few months to live, Hugh Whittaker takes pity on the girl and offers to marry her. She accepts and Hugh leaves for the West, entrusting his bride to the care of his partner, Drummond, who forces his attentions on the actress. After hearing of Hugh's death, Mary finds work on the stage with Max, a theatrical manager. Max, too, falls in love with Mary, and while she rises to stardom, he murders another admirer of hers, an actor. Soon after, Thurston, a millionaire engaged to Mary, is pushed off a boat and Drummond disappears. Stuck now with the nickname, "The Destroying Angel," Mary suffers a nervous breakdown when Hugh returns cured. Mary escapes to the seashore, but Hugh follows, eventually killing Max.
