Synopsis

Struggling artist Charles Stoddard, the victim of profiteering landlord William Harrison, is forced to sell his daughter Sylvia in order to pay the family's rent increases. Repenting when his son Walter cries for his sister, Charles returns the money and brings Sylvia home again. Falling ill, Sylvia is attended by Dr. Gardner, Harrison's son-in-law, who takes an interest in the Stoddard family. Gardner's wife Ruth and Mrs. Harrison also come to the aid of the family. Through a surprising chain of circumstances, it develops that Charles is actually Mrs. Harrison's son by a previous marriage. In an attempt to hide this fact, many altercations and misunderstandings occur between Gardner and his wife, and Mrs. Harrison and her husband, until the truth finally comes to light, and Harrison promises a home to Charles and his children.
