Synopsis

Billy the Kid is blamed when bandits begin terrorizing Mexican-American border towns. At the Willow Springs sheriff's office, Sheriff Conley warns Billy, who the sheriff knows is innocent of the crimes, that the sheriff of Red Rock is out to get him. Rather than turn himself in, Billy decides to investigate on his own. As soon as Billy and his saddlemate, Fuzzy Q. Jones, arrive in Red Rock County, they discover the body of a murdered deputy, and a note claiming responsibility signed "Billy the Kid." Billy and Fuzzy follow the trail of the killers to a cabin, where Billy is surprised to find that the outlaw he is after is a woman named Kate, who leads the bandit gang. Kate agrees to take Billy into her gang, despite the protests of her henchman Dillon, and Billy sees this as an opportunity to get evidence of their crimes. Fuzzy, meanwhile, is arrested by the sheriff because he was seen in Billy's company. When Kate orders Billy to rob a stagecoach, Dillon secretly warns the sheriff to capture Billy, but he is outwitted by Fuzzy, whom Billy frees from jail. Billy and Fuzzy then capture two members of Kate's gang and keep them hostage in a mine shack, telling Kate that they were apprehended in a foiled attempt to rob the stagecoach. Kate is making plans to rob the local bank when two more of her men disappear and she takes Billy hostage after he lectures her on the merits of honest living. Unknown to Kate, Billy has already warned the sheriff of the impending bank robbery, and Kate and her gang are chased out of town. Kate is mortally wounded in the ensuing gunfight. Before she dies, Kate shoots Dillon to prevent him from killing Billy. With the real bandits rounded up, Billy makes peace with the sheriff of Red Rock.
