Synopsis

Richard Sears, "The Power" of the city, arranges for alderman Luke Simms to be elected mayor so that he can control him, but Simms refuses to go against the public interest. After Sears sends his mistress, Florida Everett, who secretly longs for a wholesome man, to seduce Simms, they marry and live happily. Meanwhile, Nell Harter, Sears's stenographer, gives birth to Sears's child which soon dies. After Nell disappears, Simms catches her distressed brother Ned attempting to rob his house, and he employs him as his secretary. When Florida refuses to help Sears, he traps her in his country home for a night and tries to blackmail Simms. Nell returns and tells Ned about Sears. Ned breaks into Sears's home and hides when he sees Simms struggle with Sears. Ned's shot kills Sears, although Simms believes he is the murderer. At the trial, Florida bares her past, and the sympathetic jury acquits Simms. Thinking that he does not deserve Florida, Simms leaves, but Ned confesses, whereupon Simms and Florida are reunited.

This was the first film in which George Fawcett appeared. According to Variety, the story of this film is almost identical to that of an unidentified play that was presented some years earlier at the Savoy Theatre.
