Synopsis
Cecil Andrews, a young architect, and his wife Leila, live pleasantly in their modest circumstances, until Cecil designs a country mansion for Mrs. Van Orden, a charming divorcée, who tries to seduce him. Stephen Whitney, the chairman of the National Arts Commission, and Randolph Hastings, a prominent banker who married Whitney's wife, now deceased, after their divorce, both become interested in Leila, and contract with Cecil for buildings. After Cecil and Leila join the ranks of wealth due to his commissions, Cecil, pursued by Mrs. Van Orden, has trouble with his health, is threatened with a labor strike, and overspends, while Leila, courted by Whitney and Hastings, loses heavily at cards to Mrs. Van Orden. When Leila needs money to keep a pawnbroker from telling Cecil that Whitney gave her a diamond bracelet, she agrees to see Hastings at night. After Hastings refuses to give her the money unless she succumb to his advances, he is shot and killed, and although Cecil is suspected, during the inquest, Whitney is forced to confess. Cecil and Leila return to their modest home after learning that wealth does not lead to true happiness.

Notes
The source for this film May have been a play by E. Lloyd Sheldon, according to some sources. This was the feature of the first Rothapfel Unit Program, which also included a scenic presentation, a novelty with music, an epigram, and a one reel comedy, all produced by Rothapfel Pictures Corp. A press screening of the complete program, with a full orchestra, was presented at the Rialto Theatre in New York on May 9, 1919. Sources conflict concerning which of the characters "Stephen Whitney" or "Randolph Hastings" was murdered and which was the murderer.
