Synopsis
An investigation of the murder of Claudine Lerouge in a small French town, is conducted by detective Tabaret, who learns that years earlier, Claudine was paid by wealthy Richard Cameron to switch his wife's baby with that of his mistress, Madame Gerdy. Tabaret is shocked because he loves Madame Gerdy and her son Noel, who discovered the papers that revealed the switch. Cameron's son Albert is arrested because of circumstantial evidence by Magistrate Dubaron, who loves Albert's lover, Claire. Cameron tells Dubaron that he has always treated Albert icily because Madame Gerdy had another lover at the time of Albert's birth. Claire tells Dubaron that Albert was with her the night of the murder. When Cameron visits Noel and finds Madame Gerdy dying, she proves that the supposed lover was really her brother, calls Noel an assassin and dies. After Claudine's husband testifies that he prevented the switch of the babies, evidence leads to the suspicion that Noel killed Claudine so that he would gain Cameron's title and inheritance. Noel writes a confession and commits suicide. Later Albert and Claire marry.

Notes
L'Affaire Lerouge, which has been called the first detective novel, was translated into English in 1873, under the title The Widow Lerouge. The plot summary for this film was taken primarily from the scenario by Joseph H. Trant included in the copyright descriptions for the film. Because all the reviews for the film indicate that Will S. Davis did the adaptation, it is possible that the Trant scenario was not followed when the film was shot. However, reviews of the film indicate that its plot was basically the same as that of the Trant scenario.
