Synopsis

Fireman Joe Casey, failing to rescue his father from a burning building because of his fear of fire, is branded a coward by his father, "Fighting John," and driven from home. Joe takes a job in a steel mill, and in rescuing a fellow worker, he overcomes his fear of flames. He returns home, is reinstated in his job, but finds that his brother, Tim, is forcing his attentions on Mary Doyle, an orphan girl, who is Joe's sweetheart. Bessie Flannigan, who has been engaged to Tim, denounces him when she finds him with Mary. During a fight over the girls between Joe and Tim, a building is set afire; Joe rescues Mary and his brother; but Bessie perishes. Later, Joe and Mary are married.
